An exceedingly rare form in Irish silver of this early date, this salt is a particularly important object in the Institute's collection. Stylistic changes in Irish silver generally lagged well behind those of 17th century London. This salt, however, is virtually contemporary with English examples of the same period. George Gallant was one of the original members of the Dublin Goldsmiths' Company on their incorporation in 1637.

This handsome piece of Dublin silver is extremely rare. Not more than twenty pieces bearing hallmarks of the years 1638 to 1679 are known to exist. The Institute is indeed fortunate to own three other examples of Irish goldsmithing: the two George III sauceboats by Thomas Jones, given The Elizabeth C. Quinlan Foundation in 1951; and the Calderwood candelabra, dated 1740, given in memory of Eugene J. Carpenter by Mrs. Eugene J. Carpenter and Olivia Carpenter Coan in 1932.During the middle ages, and for many years thereafter, the salt was the most important object on a nobleman's table. It was always large and decorative and it served to indicate the line of demarcation, at table, between noble and inferior guests. The salt was always covered to protect it from any poisonous or foreign substance, and in the case of open salts, such as this Irish example, the scrolled brackets fixed on the top of the rim were used to secure the napkin protecting the salt itself.This rare salt is only one of thirty-two pieces of English and Irish silver and Sheffield given to the Institute by Mr. and Mrs. James Ford Bell in 1961.
